Blackbuck Antelope (Indian Antelope)

texas blackbuck hunting• The Blackbuck is one of the fastest of all terrestrial animals which can make Blackbuck hunting very difficult. The Blackbuck can reach speeds of up to 80 km/hr and one of the few antelopes where males and females have distinctive coloration, as male Blackbucks are black and white with long, twisted horns, white females are fawn colored with no horns.
• Blackbucks are listed as protected animals under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.
• Body Height: 3 – 5 ft
• Shoulder Height: 2 – 3 ft
• Tail Length: 3.9 – 6.7 in
• Weight: 55 – 77 lbs
• Horns are ringed with 1 – 4 spiral turns, rarely more than 4, and can be 31 inches in length.
• Hunting Trophy Blackbucks horns are greater than 18 inches
• Male: upper body is black with white belly and eye rings
• Female: light brown and usually hornless
• Blackbucks roam plains in herds of 15 – 20 animals with one dominant male
• Diet consists of mostly grasses, although it does eat pods, flowers, and fruits to supplement
• Maximum life recorded as 16 years; average being 12 years
• There are 43,000 living in Texas and Argentina. Natively from India where they were placed on protection by the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972
