Scimitar Horned Oryx
• A desert antelope, native to Africa • One of 4 species of oryx formerly inhabiting the whole of North Africa. Today they are classified as Extinct in the Wild (EW) • Approximately 3.28 feet at shoulder, weighing approximately 390 to 440 pounds • White coat with reddish-brown chest and black markings on forehead and length of nose. Horns are long, thin, and symmetrical. They curve backwards and can reach 3 to 4.1 feet on both males and females. Can live up to 28 years old. Female maturity is 639 days. Gestation is 247 days. Horns can reach 50 inches. • Can survive without water for many weeks because their kidneys prevent loss of water from urination and they can modify their body temperature to avoid perspiration. • A global captive breeding program initiated in the 1960s. In 1996, 2145 were on ranches in Texas.
